HERE ARE SOME DISTURBING FACTS. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that there were 3,450 distraction-related deaths on U.S. highways in 2016, another 803 highway deaths related to drowsiness, 10,497 drunk-driving deaths, and 10,111 fatalities related to speeding.
The point all these fatalities have in common is that in each case, the accident happened when the driver was doing something that he or she shouldn’t. So for these and other reasons, it is probably not surprising that automated systems that take the human driver out of the driving are becoming keenly interesting.
