MTS Sensors, a division of MTS Systems Corporation, has increased the scope of its GB-Series of highly accurate, programmable magnetostriction-based linear position sensors so that further applications can be addressed. For these latest additions to the GB-Series (referred to as the GB-N family), the sensor rod (along with fitting flange) and the housing for the supporting electronics have an extremely robust 1.4404 Stainless Steel (AISI 316L) construction, allowing their deployment in environments where there are corrosive media present.
MTS Sensors’ GB-Series devices utilize the company’s proprietary Temposonics® magnetostrictive technology. Supporting stroke lengths from 25 mm to 3.25 m, they deliver up to 1 μm resolution, ±0.005% (full scale) repeatability and ±0.02% (full scale) linearity. These sensors are available with either analog or synchronous serial interface (SSI) output options for maximum implementation flexibility. Their operational temperature range spans from -40 °C to +90 °C (+194 °F). They have IP67-rated protection against water/dust ingress when supplied with an M12 or M16 connector. Alternatively IP68-rated protection is provided for cable outlet versions. Among the industry sectors that the new corrosion-resistant versions are optimized for food/beverage manufacturing, pharmaceutical production and chemical processing, as well as bulk storage and transportation.
“There is a broadening spectrum of applications areas where exposure to corrosive substances can prove very problematic, potentially shortening the working lifespans of sensors situated there,” states Robert Luong, Technical Marketing Manager for Industrial Products at MTS Sensors. “Thanks to the properties of 1.4404 Stainless Steel, our new GB-N models can accurately determine position while ensuring superior longevity compared to conventional sensor solutions on the market. This means that MTS is now able to respond to increasing customer demand for a greater degree of corrosion resistance.”
The highly advanced Temposonics® technology developed by MTS Sensors enables long term precision position measure¬ment even when deployed in severely aggressive settings. Devices based on this sensing mechanism offer industry-leading robustness – in order that vibrations, shock, high humidity levels, elevated temperature and strong pressures can be dealt with effectively.
